When Can Laser Hair Removal Cause Excessive Hair Growth?

You may have heard horror stories of people - often women - who, instead of experiencing hair reduction, have had increased hair growth as a result of laser. This rare side effect is called Paradoxical Hypertrichosis - or paradoxical hair growth.

Understanding Paradoxical Hypertrichosis

When an area is targeted for laser hair removal, the pigment in the hair shaft is blasted with concentrated light energy. This energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft, converted into heat, and travels down the hair shaft to damage the hair follicle. Over repeated sessions, the hair follicle is significantly weakened resulting in reduced growth.

Paradoxical hair growth occurs where the laser's light stimulates the follicles of fine, light vellus hairs ("peach fuzz"), resulting in thicker, darker hair.

Causes for Paradoxical Hypertrichosis

The exact cause is not fully understood, but several factors may contribute:

ree
  • Laser Settings: Insufficient energy can damage hair follicles without destroying them, potentially stimulating hair growth. MDedge

  • Skin Type: Individuals with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types III–VI) may be at higher risk. PubMed

  • Hormonal Conditions: Disorders like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can increase susceptibility. PubMed

  • Genetics: Family history of hirsutism may predispose individuals

This side effect is rare - estimated to affect 0.6% to 10% of individuals. It is most commonly seen on the face or neck (hormonal areas).

What Can Be Done?

Managing paradoxical hypertrichosis can be challenging, but the good news is it is manageable - and reversible. You should always consult with your practitioner first.

  1. Prevention: When undergoing laser hair removal, it's essential that the surrounding areas are cooled after treatment. This prevents the stimulation of local follicles.

  2. Research: Ensure your practitioner is experienced and uses appropriate laser settings for your skin type.

  3. Combine Hair Removal Options: Under expert guidance, combining hair removal options such as electrolysis will ensure permanent hair removal. Consulting with a dermatologist can help determine the best approach for you.

  4. Practice Self-Compassion: Hair growth is a natural part of being human. Perfection does not exist - and don't let Instagram tell you otherwise! Accepting yourself and your body for all its wonders can make a significant difference in how you navigate challenges related to unwanted or excess hair growth.

Why I Can Help

I myself suffer from hormonal imbalances and hyperthyroidism, which affects hair growth on my chin/jawline.

The Soprano Titanium Laser - used at London Aesthetica - features an inbuilt cooling system to prevent reactions like Paradoxical Hypertrichosis.

My expert knowledge covers:

  1. Skin and hair density

  2. Hormonal influences

  3. Correct laser wavelength to minimise risk and ensure safe, effective results

Laser hair removal should always be personalised. If you've noticed unexpected hair growth - get in touch. I'd love to help.
